Marques Brownlee, a renowned tech reviewer with 18 million subscribers on YouTube and known as the “best tech reviewer on Earth,” recently stated in one of his videos that the Saga phone, launched by the public blockchain Solana, is the “worst phone of the year” in his opinion.
Background:
Solana’s Saga phone was hyped to be more expensive than the iPhone 15! Multicoin predicts that there will be more Solana airdrops within a year.
Solana’s Saga phone sales increased tenfold! The airdropped token, BONK, has surpassed its selling price.
In April of this year, the public blockchain Solana launched its first blockchain phone, Saga. Initially priced at $1,000, the phone faced issues such as high pricing and security vulnerabilities, resulting in poor sales. In August, the price was reluctantly reduced by 40% to $599, but the market demand remained low.
However, things took a dramatic turn shortly after! Due to the generous airdrops from the Solana ecosystem, Saga phone owners received additional airdropped tokens that were worth more than the phone itself ($599). This turned Saga into an “investment commodity,” resulting in sales increasing by more than tenfold. Users even exclaimed, “buying it was profitable.”
Tech expert rates Saga as the “worst phone of the year.”
Despite the surge in Saga sales, it couldn’t change the shortcomings of its phone design.
On the 20th, Marques Brownlee, a prominent tech reviewer with 18 million subscribers on YouTube and formerly praised by the former Vice President of Engineering at Google as the “best tech reviewer on Earth,” expressed in his “annual phone review” video that even though Saga experienced a resurgence due to its joint promotion with the Solana ecosystem’s token Bonk, it is still the “worst phone of the year” in his opinion.
However, Solana Saga’s official response on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) seems unconcerned about this blogger’s negative review of their phone. They even responded to Marques Brownlee, stating:
Saga as an investment product
Although Marques Brownlee’s evaluation of Saga is low, it is more from a pure tech perspective. In this aspect, Saga is indeed not comparable to flagship phones like Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.
But what attracts cryptocurrency enthusiasts is that people now purchase Saga mostly in hopes of gaining significant profits. Currently, including airdrop earnings, the additional income from Saga phones is mainly divided into three parts:
Airdrop earnings: Besides Bonk, holding Saga also allows users to receive airdrops from multiple projects and exclusive NFT minting qualifications, including Call of Saga, Access Protocol (ACS), Samoyedcoin (SAMO), and Solend (SLND).
Mining earnings: Mining earnings mainly refer to Saga phone owners being able to mine on the decentralized wireless communication network Helium Mobile (MOBILE) and the decentralized storage network ShdwDrive (SHDW). MOBILE has already become a hot asset in the community due to its several-fold increase in the past month.
Resale: It is understood that Solana officially announced last weekend that Saga was sold out in North America and only had a small amount of inventory left in Europe. Even on e-commerce websites like eBay, the resale price of Saga in the second-hand market has exceeded $2,000.
