Airdrop refers to the act of project teams distributing tokens for free to users’ wallets. There are many reasons behind this, such as rewarding users who actively participate and contribute to the community, or aiming to expand token liquidity.
In the past few years, users had the opportunity to earn significant returns if they participated early in projects and met the project’s set interaction standards. Today (26th), Coingecko, a well-known cryptocurrency price analysis platform, has listed the top ten airdrops with the highest historical prices from 2020 to 2023. (calculated based on the highest token price)
Uniswap: A Shared Memory of DeFi Summer
Ranked first is Uniswap’s native token, UNI, a decentralized exchange platform. The project executed one of the largest airdrops in history in September 2020, distributing approximately $6.43 billion worth of UNI tokens.
Every user who has conducted transactions on the Uniswap platform, whether on V1 or V2 protocol, was eligible to receive at least 400 UNI tokens. At that time, the value of these tokens was approximately $1,200, but when calculated based on the historical highest price of $42, it is equivalent to around $16,800.

Uniswap’s airdrop not only rewarded early users but also played a part in promoting its decentralized governance structure. It is worth mentioning that Uniswap’s airdrop had a significant impact on the entire DeFi sector. Since then, airdrops have become a common way for many cryptocurrency projects to promote and incentivize users.
TIA and Bonk: The Most Powerful Recent Airdrops
Among the top ten projects, one of the newer ones is Celestia, a modular blockchain project. It officially launched its mainnet on October 31st this year and introduced its modular network and data availability sampling (DAS). The mainnet enables Rollups and other modular chains to use Celestia to achieve data availability and consensus. At the same time, Celestia’s native token, TIA, was distributed to 580,000 users as an airdrop.
Although TIA’s performance at the opening wasn’t impressive, only $2.9, its price has increased 4.7 times in less than two months. As of the time of writing, it is at $13.83. If users who received the airdrop still hold it, the profits are considerable.

In fact, BONK is not a newly launched meme coin. It went live on December 25th last year and also airdropped 10 trillion tokens (10% of the total supply) to NFT holders on the Solana chain. If the airdropped tokens have not been sold, their current value is already worth thousands of dollars.
Looking back at the interaction between project teams and users over the past three years, although the specific airdrop strategies and technologies may be adjusted over time and market conditions, the core value of airdrops, as a form of incentive and reward mechanism, will continue to play an important role in the cryptocurrency field.
