MetaMask, the leading decentralized wallet in the Ethereum ecosystem, has long been one of the most anticipated projects for airdrops in the cryptocurrency community. A senior executive from ConsenSys, its developer, hinted last month that the issuance plan for the MetaMask token is still in progress. Additionally, Coindesk reported last week that MetaMask may support the Bitcoin network as early as June.
The rumors of MetaMask’s token issuance have been circulating since 2021, and it was confirmed by Joe Lubin, the CEO of ConsenSys, that MetaMask will issue its own token in 2022. However, last year, the product manager of MetaMask poured cold water on the speculation, stating that there were no plans for token issuance in the short term, which disappointed many users who were eagerly anticipating the airdrop.
When will MetaMask finally launch its token airdrop? This has become a pressing question in the cryptocurrency community in recent years.
Bill Hughes, the Senior Legal Counsel and Global Head of Regulatory Affairs at ConsenSys, hinted in a mid-April interview that the plan for MetaMask token issuance is still underway. When asked if MetaMask will release its own token, he responded:

There has been recent positive news surrounding MetaMask, as two insiders revealed to Coindesk on the 23rd that MetaMask, as the leading wallet in the Ethereum ecosystem, is working on integrating the Bitcoin network and may potentially support BTC as early as next month. However, the exact timeline is still unclear.
Another insider stated that the specific features of the integration with the Bitcoin network have not been determined yet, but the initial functionality may be limited and expand over time. The community is also discussing whether MetaMask will support innovative protocols such as Ordinals and Runes in the Bitcoin network.
In response to these revelations, a spokesperson for MetaMask stated, “We are excited about MetaMask’s commitment to embrace the multi-chain world of Web3 and continuously explore new integration features to enhance the usability and security of our leading self-custody solution.”
