Tonkeeper is the most popular non-custodial wallet on the TON blockchain, boasting over 30 million users. It announced the launch of the Signer application at this summer’s major TON summit, The Open Summit. This application enables Tonkeeper users to securely store and manage their private keys, further safeguarding their crypto assets on the TON network.
Historically, users of non-custodial crypto wallets (like Tonkeeper) have faced significant risks in managing their private keys. Many international headlines have reported on this risk, resulting in millions of dollars in losses and even bounties for tracking stolen funds. In just the first half of 2024, hackers stole at least $1.4 billion, with Chainalysis data showing that a substantial portion of these thefts was due to phishing scams.
The Signer developed by Tonkeeper allows users to “sign” their Tonkeeper transactions outside the wallet, providing an additional security step. Users can choose to pair Signer with a device that has the Tonkeeper application installed or use an “air-gapped” cold wallet device that is not connected to the internet, signing transactions via QR codes for enhanced security.
Daniel Cawrey, Tonkeeper’s strategic lead, stated: “With Signer, keys are stored encrypted and can only be accessed through the user’s password. Signer users can easily sign transactions by pairing with the Tonkeeper wallet on a single device or by signing transactions on a separate device using a QR code.”
Signer provides two options that allow almost anyone holding a significant amount of crypto assets to take advantage of its benefits:
– **Convenience Mode**: A seamless user experience where Signer can pair with the Tonkeeper wallet application on a single device, allowing easy access to both applications for signing transactions.
– **Maximum Security Mode**: Users can utilize a completely offline device, physically isolating their private keys and signing transactions using QR codes. This method significantly reduces the risk of online attacks.
Additionally, using Signer does not require creating a new account or new private keys. The Tonkeeper application seamlessly integrates with existing wallets to ensure compatibility with current held assets.
