Economy Daily reveals that Meta is planning to launch an innovative Quest Pro virtual reality (VR) device in the first half of next year, with rumors suggesting that the product’s development is a collaboration with South Korean conglomerate LG. In order to deepen this partnership, Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg is expected to visit South Korea for the first time on Wednesday, February 28th, for an in-depth meeting with LG’s CEO.
Meta’s Collaboration with Various Major Companies
Meta has collaborated with various major companies in the development of VR hardware. The previous Gear VR was supported by Samsung, the Oculus Go was manufactured by Xiaomi, and the Oculus Rift S was designed and manufactured in partnership with Lenovo. Each product incorporates the brand characteristics and technological capabilities of its respective partners. People are eagerly anticipating how the LG brand and product will be integrated and named this time, although it is currently unclear whether Quest Pro 2 will be its final name.
In addition to Meta and LG, other tech giants are also actively exploring the XR field. Last year, Samsung announced a collaboration with Google to develop head-mounted display devices, with Google leading the software development. These collaborations demonstrate the high level of attention and investment in XR devices in the tech industry.
One major highlight of the new headset is the integration of LG’s webOS operating system, which is used in LG televisions. This may mean that the headset will have a built-in virtual LG TV, supporting multiple streaming services such as Netflix and Disney+. This is a significant improvement for Quest, which currently has limitations in media playback.
The VR market will witness competition among three major players
Meta’s ongoing development of Codec Avatars aims to achieve realistic human-like avatars through facial tracking sensors in headsets, with the goal of changing the way remote communication is conducted. This is similar to Apple’s Personas feature, although Personas is still in its early stages.
With the re-collaboration of Meta and LG, as well as the involvement of Google and Samsung, the high-end VR headset market is expected to witness competition among Apple, Meta/LG, and Google/Samsung next year.
