SBF is currently being held in a prison in Brooklyn, where he is facing “cruel and inhumane” prison conditions and is frequently subjected to extortion and harassment, according to fellow inmates.
Last year, SBF, the founder of a cryptocurrency exchange who was convicted of a crime, is currently being detained in a prison in Brooklyn, awaiting the outcome of a trial that could result in a sentence of up to 110 years. According to the New York Post, SBF’s life in prison is actually quite miserable, as he is currently being secretly extorted and harassed by other inmates.
SBF becomes a target of bullying by inmates. The specific details of prison life were revealed by 29-year-old former police officer Carmine Simpson, who was arrested in 2021 for allegedly soliciting child pornography. Simpson publicly appealed to Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of the United States District Court, requesting leniency for SBF, as he described the prison conditions SBF is facing as “cruel and inhumane.” Simpson wrote in a letter that SBF is forced to eat “uncooked rice, a spoonful of disgusting-looking beans, and week-old brown lettuce” every day.
Furthermore, Carmine Simpson wrote in the letter that SBF is subjected to bullying, harassment, and attacks much more frequently than the average inmate. In fact, his experience of imprisonment is extremely difficult.
Continuing to espouse “effective altruism” in prison. Simpson, in his request for leniency to Judge Kaplan, cited SBF’s self-proclaimed “effective altruism.” In a letter submitted to the Manhattan Federal Court on Tuesday, Simpson wrote:
To his surprise, Simpson stated that as he got to know SBF better, he believed that this SBF, who is charged with multiple counts of fraud and money laundering and the misuse of billions of dollars of client funds, is the “most selfless person” he has ever met. He said that even in prison, SBF can still see the best in everyone. The former police officer called on the court to release SBF so that he can work and improve the world.
