Recently, Japanese investment company Metaplanet announced a significant plan to invest $5.4 billion to substantially increase its Bitcoin holdings, aiming to reach 210,000 bitcoins by the end of 2027. This strategy could position Metaplanet as the world’s second-largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder, trailing only MicroStrategy, and it has already triggered a positive market reaction, with the company’s stock price sharply rising. This further highlights the growing trend of corporations incorporating Bitcoin into their asset allocation.
Market Reaction
On June 6, 2025, Metaplanet announced a revised Bitcoin acquisition plan, raising its original target from 21,000 to 210,000 bitcoins, with completion expected by the end of 2027. If successful, Metaplanet’s Bitcoin holdings will rank just behind MicroStrategy, the largest publicly traded holder globally.
Following the announcement, Metaplanet’s stock (3350T) performed strongly during the trading session on June 9, 2025, with a peak increase of 22%. According to Google Finance data, the trading price on that day reached 1,505 yen (approximately $10.42), with intraday highs touching 1,641 yen (approximately $11.36), marking a maximum increase of 22%. Currently, Metaplanet holds 8,888 bitcoins, with the latest purchase of 1,088 bitcoins announced on June 2.
To achieve this “555 Million Plan” (as compared to the previous “21 Million Plan”), Metaplanet plans to raise approximately 770.9 billion yen (about $5.4 billion) by issuing about 555 million stock warrants with a moving exercise price. The exercise price of such financial instruments will be adjusted based on the company’s stock performance, helping to ensure incremental capital raising and avoid excessive dilution of equity.
