The Ethereum Kankun upgrade “Dencun” was officially activated at 21:55 on the 13th in Taiwan time. However, there seemed to be a slight delay at the time of activation, and ETH did not surge as expected by the market. At the time of writing, it temporarily dropped to $3,930.
22:13 Update: The upgrade has now been confirmed as completed, and the downward trend of ETH has eased, rising again and approaching $4,000.
What is the most important proposal of the Kankun upgrade, EIP-4844?
Ethereum EIP-4844 is the core content of the Kankun upgrade, symbolizing a major step towards scaling in the right direction. It introduces a new transaction type called “blob” as a way for Rollup to release transaction data. Compared to the current calldata storage of immutable and memory-read-only transaction data, blob has a much larger storage capacity and is cheaper, laying the foundation for future scaling.
However, it should be noted that Blob is mainly used to reduce the data storage cost of L2 (which previously accounted for over 90% of L2 transaction gas fees), thereby reducing the gas fees of Ethereum L2. Its impact on gas fees for the Ethereum mainnet is relatively much smaller.
