Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade has been successfully implemented, resulting in a significant reduction in Layer 2 transaction costs. Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, expressed his celebration and also revealed the upcoming progress of ETH.
The highly anticipated Ethereum Dencun upgrade was successfully launched on the mainnet last night. The most important change introduced is the new transaction type called “Blobs,” which brings higher transaction efficiency and lower transaction costs to Ethereum’s Layer 2 scaling solution.
Currently, major L2 networks are gradually integrating Blobs (Optimism, Starknet, and zkSync have already been updated, while Arbitrum One and Base will be completed later today), and the projects that have completed integration have indeed witnessed a significant decrease in gas fees.
Comparison of L2 gas fees before and after the upgrade:
Based on data from the L2 Fees website, the gas fees from the evening of the 13th (before the Dencun upgrade) and the morning of the 14th were compared, and the following changes were observed:
– zkSync Era for sending ETH:
– Previously: $0.15 → Now: $0.04
– StarkNet for sending ETH:
– Previously: $0.71 → Now: $0.07
– OP Mainnet for sending ETH:
– Previously: $0.36 → Now: less than $0.01

Regarding the next steps for Ethereum after the Dencun upgrade, Vitalik Buterin posted on the decentralized social platform Farcaster, stating:

Ethereum’s development roadmap consists of six parts: The Merge, The Surge, The Scourge, The Verge, The Purge, and The Splurge, all running concurrently. The introduction of Blobs through the EIP-4844 in the Dencun upgrade belongs to the progress of The Surge. Vitalik stated that the foundational milestone for scalability has been achieved with this successful implementation.
As for the mentioned upcoming progress, the Wölkli tree (verkle trees) and history expiry belong to the goals of The Verge and The Purge, respectively.
