Vitalik pointed out today that the biggest user experience issue with Ethereum L2 is that it doesn’t feel like a unified Ethereum. He suggested that before developing advanced features, the focus should be on ensuring the implementation of basic functionalities. Additionally, he predicted that future L2 solutions will be ZK rollups and expressed great admiration for ENS, considering it one of Ethereum’s most successful non-financial applications.

Vitalik Buterin, the founder of Ethereum, had an in-depth discussion today with several ecosystem participants to explore how to improve the technical implementation and future direction of Ethereum L2. In response to Soul Wallet founder, Chia-Jun Tseng’s viewpoint that “we need shared ordering, not intent,” Vitalik added:
Vitalik further emphasized that the biggest user experience issue we currently face is that the L2 world doesn’t feel “like a unified Ethereum” yet. While there has been significant improvement compared to a year ago, it is still far from ideal.
Vitalik suggested that before diving into the development of advanced functionalities, it is important to ensure the implementation of basic functionalities. He pointed out:
Similarly, Vitalik further stated that this thinking also applies to security and decentralization. Which functionalities have been implemented or are close to being implemented on L1 but lag far behind on L2s? He provided the following examples:
Light clients: If there are light clients on L1, they can verify the state of L2.
Basic reliability: The network should not stop running or exhibit strange rollback phenomena. Ethereum has only experienced one severe issue in its 9-year history.
Proof systems: For example, we need more Phase 1 rollups.
In summary, Vitalik believes that it is important to prioritize addressing basic issues, establishing standards and infrastructure across L2, and improving the overall user experience and security to make the L2 ecosystem more like a unified Ethereum.
Vitalik: ENS is Ethereum’s most successful non-financial application
Furthermore, in response to a somewhat teasing comment by researcher Jian Chen, “ENS is Vitalik’s baby, he takes it everywhere,” Vitalik responded:
Upon the release of that comment, ENS surpassed $21.33 within a short period of time, reaching a high of $21.33 from $17.87, and was temporarily reported at $20.4 before the deadline, with a surge of over 40% in the past 24 hours.
Vitalik indeed holds high regard for ENS. In January, he tweeted that ENS is “super important” and emphasized that ENS should maintain accessibility and universality for all users of the Ethereum network, especially on Ethereum L2. Vitalik believes that all L2s should operate on a trustless, Merkle-proof-based CCIP resolver, allowing ENS subdomains to be registered, updated, and read directly on the L2 network. This incentivized a 70% surge in ENS at the time.
Vitalik predicts that ZK rollups will become mainstream
Additionally, Arthur Breitman, a Tezos engineer, mentioned during the discussion that under Optimistic Rollups, shared ordering is not an impractical tool; in fact, it is more like a glorified custodial bridge.
In response, Vitalik expressed his views on the future of L2:
