In May, Ethereum Foundation researchers Justin Drake and Dankrad Feist announced their appointments as advisors to the Ethereum re-staking protocol EigenLayer, sparking a heated discussion in the cryptocurrency community. Although the involvement of Ethereum Foundation members as advisors was mostly seen as having a positive impact on the project, the community was concerned that holding dual roles could lead to conflicts of interest, especially if the project could potentially conflict with Ethereum’s interests now or in the future.
However, Drake stated that he trusted the character of Ethereum Foundation members and insisted on joining in a personal capacity. Similarly, Feist took on the advisory role in a personal capacity, and both stated that if the development of EigenLayer proved to be detrimental to Ethereum, they would immediately terminate their advisory positions.
In this context, on the 2nd, Justin Drake tweeted that he had resigned from his advisory position at the EigenFoundation in September, stating that he would not participate in any advisory, angel investment, or security committee positions in the future to maintain a stance of neutrality.
Additionally, another researcher, Feist, also tweeted on the 2nd that he would resign from his advisory position at Eigenlayer due to conflicts of interest that made it difficult for him to effectively fulfill his duties as an Ethereum researcher.
The resignation statements of the two researchers reflect the community’s concerns about possible “conflicts of interest” between Ethereum and EigenLayer, which could affect the researchers’ neutrality and thus harm Ethereum’s interests.
The author believes that the frequent sale of ETH by the Ethereum Foundation, combined with the long-term low performance of the Ethereum ecosystem and the continuous weakness of the coin price, has gradually led to disappointment within the community. Furthermore, the governance token $EIGEN of EigenLayer continued to decline after trading opened, forcing the two researchers to withdraw from their advisory roles at EigenLayer to avoid further community skepticism.
